Mary Steffen was born on July 13, 1887, and attended school in Freeport, Illinois. Before her marriage to Jake Steffen, in 1908, she worked many years in a Rawleigh plant.

In 1910 the Steffen family moved to Iowa where they farmed near Colwell, Iowa, and North Washington, Iowa. Later, in 1914, they moved to Riceville, Iowa, and farmed.

They were the parents of four children, all of whom are living. She also enjoys visits from her grandchildren, whom she talks about frequently.

She moved to the Riceville Community Rest Home on June 13, 1977.
