It was a snowy day, February 5, 1910, in a house in Marshalltown, Iowa, when Evalyn Cain was born. When she was four years old, Eva began school; being taught by her aunt, in Butler county, Iowa.
At the age of nine, her family moved to Dumont, Iowa. Her father enlisted in the Army during World War I, and was in the service for two years. When he came home, he decided to move to Aredale, Iowa.
Eva owned a pet -- a white pidgeon named Snowball. While moving to Aredale, she had Snowball in a small box beside her. Deciding to play with the pidgeon, she looked in the box, but there was no pidgeon to be found. Just then there was the sound of a cooing behind her, and there sat Snowball on the buggy, giving her a questioning stare.
In Aredale, they lived on a homestead with a huge woods and a glistening creek. Eva and her two sisters would spend carefree days wading through the water, riding horses, or just picking wild flowers in the woods.
Her father decided to move next to Parkersburg, Iowa. There eva had her 11th birthday.
Her school was two miles from her home, and the school was made up of all German nationality students, except for Eva and her sisters. The three girls would ride horses to and from the school. The boys would tease the girls after school, so, often the teacher would let the girls go home early so as to get a head start getting to their buggy. But some times the teacher would not let them out early, and the boys would taunt them by calling the girls, "popcorn, peanuts or huckleberry pie." The boys would then jump on the horse and climb in the buggy and tease them.
The family then moved across to the other side of the river, and to a new school.
Then it was on to New Hartford, where her folks got their first car, a Model-T. After that, they lived in Waterloo, and Eva got a job at Hinson Manufacturing Co. Later she did house work at other homes, earning $7.50 per week.
In Waterloo, Eva had her first date. She had just gotten her weekly wages that day. Her date picked her up in his car, and after the dance he took her home and saw her to the door. They then said goodnight and he left. Eva then realized she had left her wages in his car! But she could not remember his name -- only that his first name was Ray. Luckily the next day Ray brought her money back. He was Ray Saltou. They started seeing more of each other, and the next June the two were married.
The newlyweds moved to a farm near Northwood, Iowa. It was the first year of farming by themselves, and a baby boy was born there -- Darrell.
The family them moved to near Albert Lea Lake, where their first daughter was born -- LaRae.
At Glenville, Iowa, their second daughter, Barb, was born. Then they moved to Grundy Center, Iowa, and lived there for 18 years. It was there that Junior, Betty Lou, Charles, Linda and Jimmy were born. And the three oldest of the children graduated.
Ray and Eva then decided to move to Dynsdale, Iowa. Here they lived on a very hilly farm. Then they brought the family to Riceville, Iowa, where Ray bought 80 acres of land. All the rest of the kids graduated here in Riceville.
Ray died in 1966 of a heart attack. Eva continued to live on the farm. All of her children lived near by, except for Barb, who lived in Grundy Center, and Darrell, who lived in California.
Laura Merrill, who originally wrote this piece, is Eva Saltou's grandchild.
Evelyn Saltou died in November 1981, at the age of 71. Both her and Ray are buried in Riverside Cemetery at Riceville.
