OSAGE, IOWA - Frederick D. Nichols, 75, former Osage resident, died at Mount Park Hospital at St. Petersburg, Florida May 12. His father, Dr. Horace Nichols, practiced medicine in this community from 1881 until his death in 1898.

Frederick was graduated from Cedar Valley Seminary here and was one of the first students to enroll in the University of Chicago. He was a protege of Coach Alonzo Stagg in football and baseball. In 1896 he was on the mound as the leading pitcher on the baseball team representing the University of Chicago in it's series with Brown University for the championship of the United States. Following his graduation he studied abroad. He was affiliated for years with the publishing house of Grumm & Co. at Boston, Massachusetts. Later he engaged in private publishing in New York City. His later years have been spent in retirement in Florida.

He is survived by his wife and children, Frederick Jr., and Harriett. Hugh Nichols of Osage is a cousin.

Frederick Day Nichols son of Horace Nichols and Sarah Jane Robinson on 8 Aug 1897. The marriage ended in divorce. Frederick was born about 1871, in Iowa. He died about 1944.

FREDERICK DAY NICHOLS was a football player and graduated from the University of Chicago. After college he was employed by the Ginn Publishing Company at Boston, Massachusetts. After his divorce, Frederick quit the publishing business and moved to the Bitterroot River Valley in Montana to help his brother-in-law manage an orchard. He married second __________ at __________, __________ ___________. They had one son, Frederick Day Nichols, Jr., who was born about 1914 in Minnesota. Frederick senior died about 1944.
