DEATH OF MRS. MUFFLEY
Mrs. Nancy Madison Muffley was born at Smithfield, N.Y., December 22, 1814, and died in Osage, Iowa, November 15, 1895. Her youth and girlhood were passed in her native state and on the 4th of February, 1834, she was married to William Muffley. This marriage relation continued for nearly 61 years until the death of her husband last January.
In 1856 she came with her husband to Iowa and settled at Waverly. For years they had the varied experiences of all pioneers. They had their hardships, their trials, their joys, their hopes. For several years she made this city her home, but spent much of the time with the absent children. She spent the most of her time within her own home and for that reason did not make a wife circle of acquaintances.
She was the mother of five children, all of whom survive her: W. H. Muffley, J. M. Muffley, Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. Bartlett, and Mrs. Holt. She had twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He husband was the first of the four generations to die.
In early life Mrs. Muffley was a member of the Methodist church, but she had not been a regular attendant of the church in later years. She never lost her faith in God and she was a diligent student of the Bible up to the last. She was a kind and loving mother whose children revere her name today. Though she was in fair health through the fall, her life hung by a brittle thread. On Friday she felt unusually well. In the afternoon she was taken sick and in a few hours she was gone. She tried to live the life of the righteous, and the end was peace.
The funeral service was held Monday afternoon under the direction of Rev. W. W. Gist.
