MILTON S. STACY
MITCHELL COUNTY
PIONEER, PASSES

DEATH OCCURRED FRIDAY DURING NIGHT;
CAME TO THIS COUNTY IN 1866

Friday morning our community was greatly grieved to learn that one of its oldest and most esteemed citizens, Milton S. Stacy, had passed away during the night. It did not seem to his friends that such could be the case. Only a few days before he was seen upon our streets apparently in his usual health and vigor.

Milton Skiff Stacy was born at Hudson, Walworth county, Wisconsin, on December 8, 1840, and died at Osage, Iowa, February 4, 1927. He was the son of John and Laura (West) Stacy. His father was a doctor and in addition to following his chosen profession, was for a time superintendent of schools and county supervisor.

Mr. Stacy was the oldest of five children, the others being Mrs. Emily L. Scofield and Edmund W. Stacy of Osage, Adah Louisa and William Wallace, having preceded him in death. His father died when Mr. Stacy was just a young lad, and at this early age he was called upon to assume the management of the farm, and assist his mother in the care of the family.

On December 8, 1864, Mr. Stacy was united in marriage with Mariette B. Fulsom. They continued their residence in Wisconsin until 1866, when like many others of our early pioneers, they decided upon the west as their future home, and moved to the village of Mitchell, Iowa, where Mr. Stacy entered into partnership with his brother-in-law, Franklin A. Scofield, conducting a general store and grain business under the firm name of Scofield & Stacy.

In 1872 they moved to Osage, where they continued in the same line of business until 1885, when Mr. Stacy sold his interest to Mr. Scofield and formed a partnership with his son-in-law, C. C. Crosby, operating a general store under the firm name of Stacy & Crosby. In 1905, Mr. Stacy retired from the mercantile business, and later on purchased a retail coal business, and with the exception of about five years, has continually been identified with this line of business, the last few years his grandson, F. L. Belzer, being associated with him in the conduct of same.

Mr. Stacy has long been identified with the Congregational church of Osage and was one of its oldest members. He was for many years a faithful member of its choir, and has held many of the offices of the church. He was always willing to give of his time and talents to the work of the church, which he so dearly loved.

Mr. Stacy's friends recognized his business ability, and on several occasions he was called upon to hold public office, at one time serving as a member of the board of supervisors of Mitchell County for seven years.

He had long been a Mason, belonging to the Osage Blue Lodge, chapter and commandery, having held office in each; and was also a member of the order of the Eastern Star, and Zuro Temple of Mystic Shrine of Minneapolis.

To Mr. and Mrs. Stacy were born five children -- Mrs. Ella Crosby of Osage; Mrs. Jessie M. Lieben of Long Beach, Calif.; John F. of Rochester, Minnesota; Mis Florence E., and Mrs. Maude E. Smith of Osage, and these, together with his widow and kindred and a host of friends, remain to mourn his passing.

The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, in the charge of the Masonic order and the pastor, the Rev. J. Lyerly. A long cortege followed the remains to our beautiful city of the dead, where all that was mortal was laid away.
