Robert James Lockie 1845-1921

McIntire and the surrounding country are again bowed down in sorrow occasioned by the sudden death last Saturday afternoon of one of its oldest and most highly honored and influential citizens, R.J.Lockie, death being due to heart failure.

Mr. Lockie had started to the depot to meet his daughter, Mrs. Charles Wall, and her children from Sumner, who were coming up on the afternoon train, and was stricken in the alley back of Dr. Anderson's residence. Mrs. Anderson discovered him in a crouching position and partially leaning against the barn, and she called the doctor, but upon examination he found that life had been extinct for several minutes. From the position of the body it would indicate that he must have felt the attack coming on and endeavored to lean against the barn for support, having previously had heart trouble on several occasions.

During the past few months Mr. Lockie had apparently been in good health, but he must have had a premonition death was near, as he had gone to the bank only a few days before and fixed up his affairs for final disposal, even going so far to set aside a sum of money to defray funeral expenses.

Robert J. Lockie, oldest son of Robert and Margaret Lockie, was born in Glasgow Scotland, Dec. 28,1845. In 1849 he came with his parents to America and settled in Dundee, Ill, later coming to Howard County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Stevenson April 10,1869 and moved onto a farm near Maple Leaf in the same county, where he resided for 26 years, after which he came to McIntire and has made his home here for the past 26 years, and up to the time of his death last Saturday, Feb. 5, 1921.

This union, was blessed with 12 children, three of whom died in infancy and Margaret, passing away at the age of years.

Those left to mourn besides his faithful wife are three sons and five daughter, viz; Albert J. of Riceville, Walter G. and Robert A. of McIntire, Mrs. Marie Thomas of Cucamonga, Calif.,Mrs. Jennie Marshall of Cresco, Mrs. Elizabeth Moss of Riceville, Mrs. Delia Morrow of Le Roy, Minn., and Mrs. Edith Wall of Sumner, besides 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also three brothers and three sisters: James Lockie of Riceville, Wm. Lockie of Oakes, N. Dak., Geo. Lockie of Colville, Wash., Mrs. Margaret Young of Bozeman, Mont., Mrs. Belle McDonald of Missouri and Mrs. Elizabeth Fuller of Anaheim, Calif.

Deceased became a member of the Congregational church while residing in Maple Leaf and was transferred to the McIntire church when he came here. He was faithful at all times to his obligations and was one of the main factors in guiding the destinies of the local church. He was also a member of the local I.O.O.F. lodge.

Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Lockie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, and thru all these years their devotion has grown deeper and deeper, as is also the case with the children.

The funeral was held this forenoon at 11:30 o'clock from the M.E. church, conducted by the Rev. Hempstead of Elkaper, but formerly pastor of the local Congregational church, and assisted by Rev.Bodenham of the Baptist church, after which the body was shipped to Elma for burial.
