Who Died Near Osage

OSAGE, IOWA - Samuel Milberry Rowell was born in Amsterdam, New York, July 25, 1841, and died at his home three miles west of Osage, Iowa, October 29, 1904.

He received a good education in the public schools and later he enjoyed the advantages furnished by a school of higher education, graduating from the Polytechnic College of Chittenango, New York. In the time of the nation's need he volunteered his service to Company E., Ind. Infantry, August 12, 1962. He was mustered out of service at the close of the war June 8, 1865. Because of his natural qualifications, together with the experience and especially the mental training received in the college he was chosen, and, for the most part during his service, acted as a private secretary to General John A. Logan.

On November 16, 1883, at Waverly, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Anna M. Sheehan, oldest daughter of Daniel Sheehan of Osage. Mr. and Mrs. Rowell soon returned to Osage and have since made their home here.

Three children were born into their home: Neal, Katherine and Berry, all of whom with their mother survive. Three brothers also survive, C. M., of Johnstown, New York, G. B. of Waterloo, and John M., of Garfield, Washington.

Mr. Rowell was a genial, generous good hearted man. He has been a great sufferer, especially during the last year or more, but he never complained. On Saturday morning surrounded by his family he passed peacefully away.

The funeral service, conducted by Reverend D. I. Coon, of Waverly, was held at the home on Monday, attended by a large number of neighbors and old soldiers, the pall bearers being made up of the latter, and the body was placed in the Osage Cemetery beside that of Mr. Rowell's father.
