Perry M. Crooks Funeral Held Friday, August 29

Funeral Services for Perry M. Crooks, 90, who died at Mercy Hospital in Mason City August 26, were held August 29 at the Schroeder Funeral Home here with the Rev. Bruce Wittern, pastor of the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, officiating.

Perry Mason Crooks was born April 21, 1890 in Elkhart, Illinois. He lost his parents at an early age, and was adopted by Henry and Cordelia Crooks of Lacon, Illinois, where he grew to manhood.

He married Alma Ries February 14, 1911 in Lacon, Illinois. After their marriage they came to Iowa and farmed near Dougherty for a number of years. Mr. Crooks was a very good horseman, which was a much needed talent in his younger years. He broke horses for the U.S. Cavalry during World War I.

The Crooks family also lived in Mason City, Manly, and St. Ansgar areas where he did farm work. In 1952 they moved to Quarry near Marshalltown where Mrs. Crooks died in January of 1958. After his wife's death he made his home with his daughter, Mary Beyer for a while.

He was at the Extended Care Facility in Hampton for a few years before transferring to the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center. Mr. Crooks is survived by three sons: Wilbur of Dougherty; Henry of Kensett; Otto of Mason City; one daughter: Mrs. Mary Beyer of St. Ansgar; 34 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, foster parents, wife and three great grandchildren.

Burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery with Rev. Wittern in charge of committal services.

Funeral held for St. Ansgar resident

Last rites for a St. Ansgar man, Perry Crooks, 90, were held Friday. Mr. Crooks died at a Mason City hospital August 26, following a month's illness. The Reverend Bruce Wittern, pastor of the United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar was in charge of the rites at the Schroeder Funeral Home and burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Perry Mason Crooks was born April 21, 1890, in Elkhart, Illinois and his parents died in his early childhood. He was adopted by Harry and Cordelia Crooks of Lancon, Illinois, and he grew to manhood there.

Alma May Ries and Perry Crooks were married February 14, 1911. They farmed near Dougherty for a number of years. During World War I he broke horses for the United States Calvary. They lived for a time in Mason City, Manly and Quarry, where Mrs. Crooks died in 1968. He then made his home with his daughter, Mary Beyer, and at the extended care facility in Hampton before being transferred to the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Surviving are his daughter, Mary Beyer of St. Ansgar; three sons, Wilbur of Dougherty, Henry of Kensett and Otto of Mason City; 34 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife; his parents, foster parents and three great-grandchildren.
