OBITUARY

Mrs. Mary Amanda Knowlton

Gently, peacefully, without a struggle and apparently without pain, this good woman passed on to the higher life from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma A. Drake, near Mitchell in this county, on Tuesday the 8th of March in the eighty-eight year of her age.

Mrs. Knowlton's maiden name was Soles; and she was born July 8, 1817, at Durham, Province of Quebec, where her early childhood was spent until she was about 12 years of age, when she removed with her parents to Knowlton, Browne county, Quebec, where she grew to womanhood. She was married March 18, 1839 to Hanson L. Knowlton of which union ten children were born, four of whom have preceded her to the heavenly home, three in infancy and one, Charlotte M., wife of A.K. Lewis, in mature years. Mrs. Agnes A. Rexford of Minneapolis, Willard W. of Colorado, Warren H. of Minneapolis, George A. of North Bay, Ontario,Canada, Arthur R. of Knowlton, Wash., and Mrs. Emma A. Drake of Mitchell, survive. She is also survived by her aged husband and eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The family lived in Canada until the spring of 1865, when they removed to Mitchell county, and lived on a farm one mile south of Osage until the fall of 1890 when the farm was sold and Mr. and Mrs. Knowlton have since lived with their children. Mrs. Knowlton was a life long Universalist and she and her husband were among the very first to identify themselves with the church in this city. She was a true and devoted Christian, not in the merely technical sense alone, but in the real sense in which one is ever a christian, that the spirit of Christ, the spirit of love and good will and helpfulnees which filled her life and made her a true, loving wife, mother, friend, neighbor, the only kind of christianity that is of any value here or any where else; or that will save and bless.

The aged husband and all her relatives have the full sympathy of all their friends and acquaintances.

The funeral services were held at the home where during her declining years, she had been so tenderly cared for,the services being conducted by Rev. W. S. Ralph and Agnes S. Ralph. The remains rest in the family lot in the Osage cemetery.
