Richard T. Torney was born August 1, 1833 (or 1834) Bas near Quebec, Canada to Richard Torney and Jane McIlroy. Found in the 1861 census at Montcalm, Canada East, Canada. He married Elizabeth Law (Laur) (b December 1833, Canada - d July 26, 1918 Osage, Iowa) on February 6, 1862 at Quebec, Canada. They emigrated 1867/1869 [found two dates] to Lodi, Columbia, Wisconsin and two years later moved to Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa and began farming.

Found in the 1880 to 1920 censuses at Rock, Mitchell, IA.

They had 5 sons:

1. Edward James (b July 1864 Canada - d April 28, 1950 Mitchell, Iowa) married Luva Anna Whipple (b July 23, 1873 Vermont, d July 22, 1963 Osage, Iowa) 5 children: Vera Grace, John Gordon, Grant Richard, Herman Merle and Celia L.

2. Albert Richard (b April 3, 1866 Canada - d August 4, 1943 Mitchell, Iowa) married Paulina Erickson (b July 1869 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa, d September 28, 1933 Osage, Iowa) in the year 1897; 5 children: Ernest Alvin, Jessie Elizabeth, Raymond Philip, Gayle E and Gladys Evelyn.

3. Hugh Alexander (b January 3, 1869 Quebec, Canada - d April 14, 1925 Barron, Wisconsin) married Alice Coralyn Joy (b ?, d December 6, 1951)on October 7, 1914 Mitchell, Iowa. No children.

4. William H (b September 3, 1869 Lodi, Columbia, WI - d November 14, 1935 Mitchell, Iowa) married Hattie Fessenden (b Jan 1877 IA) on March 11, 1896; 2 sons: Cecil Roy and Leslie Maurice.

5. George E (b July 1874 Rock, Mitchell, IA - d 1916 Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa) married Myrtle Delphine Auringer (b July 3, 1883 Jamestown, Howard, Iowa, d July 14, 1966 Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa) on April 5, 1902 at Osage, Iowa. 4 children: Glendon G; Golda Irene; Emma May and Lloyd D.

Richard T. Torney died July 19, 1922 at Mitchell County, he was 87 years, 11 months and 9 days old. Buried at Osage City Cemetery, Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
