DEATH OF HANS K. LANE

Mr. H.K. Lane, one of the oldest residents of our town, who suffered from a stoke of apoplexy on the 27th of June, died at his home last Saturday evening at eleven o'clock.

OBITUARY OF HANS K. LANE

Hans Knudson Lane was born on the 11th day of January, 1841, at LilleOdegaarden Lombs Prestegjeld Norway, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Here he spent his boyhood days until at the age of seventeen he emigrated to America and settled near Dodgeville, Wisconsin.

Then came the War of the Rebellion. At the age of nineteen years he enlisted on the 28th day of October, 1861, in Co. C 12th Regular Wisconsin Volunteers and served throughout the entire conflict. His company was one of the many that participated in Sherman's march to the sea. On July 22, 1864, he was woundd at Atlanta, Ga., and was confined in the hospital for four months, after which he rejoined his company and served until honorably discharged at Washington, D.C., on August 9th, 1865.

After the war he was appointed foreman of a construction company and helped build the Union Pacific R.R. After this was completed he returned to Dodgeville, Wis., and on the 24th of May, 1866, he was united in marriage to Mary L. Nelson, who preceded him in death on January 15th, 1919. In 1879 he moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa, where he worked at the carpenter trade for a few years. He then took up farming and bought a farm four miles south of town, where he lived until in 1900, when he moved to the new home in St. Ansgar, where he has resided since. Being still interested in farms and farm work he took no active part, but spent all his spare time in cabinet making. He was an active member of the Mitchell G.A.R. until it dissolved, and always took pride and pleasure in attending the Memorial services held in honor of his comrades.

On June 27, 1921, he was stricken with apoplexy, thereby losing his power of speech and the use of the entire right side. This made him helpless and his children did everything in their power to make him comfortable.

On July 23, 1921, he passed away at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 12 days.

He is survived by his five children. Mrs. Nellie Groth, Mrs. Clara Tollefson, Carl, Emma and Louis Lane, nine grandchildren, two brothers and one sister, besides other relatives.

On July 26, 1921, with Rev. M.E. Waldeland officiating, he was laid to rest beside his wife in the N.L. cemetery with military honors. The American Legion Post acted as the military escort and fired the salute over his grave.
