JOSEPH P. KIENAST III

MASON CITY - Joseph P. Kienast III, 82, of Alhambra, Calif., and formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Sept. 24, 2002) at the Lutheran Health Facility in Alhambra.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, Mason City, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery south of Hampton. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Joseph P. Kienast Memorial Fund.

Joseph Peter Kienast III was the third child born to Henry and Herbertina (Michels) Kienast on March 30, 1920, at Osage. Joe graduated from Osage High School, where he had been a varsity wrestler. He enlisted in the U. S. Marines in 1942 and served in the South Pacific area from May to December of 1942. His battle engagements included Midway Island, Guadalcanal and the other British Solomon Islands. He was honorably discharged in October 1943.

On Dec. 31, 1945, he was united in marriage to Nina Irene Thies. Joe attended Iowa State University and Drake University, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree. He worked as a sales representative for Moore Business Forms. He also worked in the construction industry for AMF and Henkel Construction Co., and was an apartment landlord.

He is survived by two children, Mary Jo Kienast of South Pasadena, Calif., and Joseph Peter Kienast IV of Southlake, Texas; three grandchildren, Jennifer Koehler, John Koehler and Sam Kaufman; one sister, Ann Boslee of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and two brothers, Val Kienast of Wayne, Neb., and Jim Kienast of Orlando, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sister Stephania and Sister Magella; and four brothers, Arnold, Bernard (Duke), Robert and Paul.
