MRS. E. J. SCOFIELD IS DEAD AT OSAGE

Osage, Ia. – Mrs. E. J. Scofield, 71, prominent Osage woman, died at noon Wednesday at Nissen hospital of a heart attack. She had become ill early Wednesday, when she was taken to the hospital.

Mrs. Scofield had been prominent in community enterprises in Osage all her life. She was affiliated with the Daughters of the American Revolution, local and state organizations of the Women’s Christian Temperance union and the Shakespearean club.

She was primary and Sunday school superintendent for many years. Mrs. Scofield and her husband had spent their summers at Chatauqua Lake, N. Y., for many years.

An only daughter, Mrs. Sam Clay of Clarinda was to arrive Wednesday.

Grace Emily Smith was born August 1, 1874 in Mitchell Co., Iowa, the daughter of Gershom Smith and Emma Cordelia (Howard) Smith. She married Edwin John Scofield, the son of Franklin and Emily (Stacy) Scofield.

She and her husband are buried in the Osage Cemetery.

MRS. E.J. SCOFIELD

Lifelong Resident of Osage
Died Suddenly Wednesday
Following Stroke

Funeral services for Mrs. E. J. Scofield, 70, a lifelong resident of Osage, were held Friday afternoon, October 19, at the Champion Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stiles Lessly of De Kalb, Illinois, former pastor of the Osage Congregational church, officiating. Burial was made in the Osage Cemetery.

Mrs. Scofield died Wednesday, October 17, 1945, at Nissen hospital following a heart attack suffered at two o'clock Wednesday morning. She had been in comparative good health and her sudden death was a shock to her many friends and acquaintances.

Grace Smith Scofield was born on August 1, 1874, the daughter of Gehrsom Welles Smith and Emily Cordelia Howard Smith. She was a graduate of Osage high school an dCedar Valley Seminary, and later took a secretarial course in Minneapolis. This fitted her for a position in th eoffice of her uncle, James A. Smith, where she worked for some time.

On September 2, 1895, she was united in marriage with Edwin J. Scofield, and on September 2, 1945, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. One daughter, Irma Lorain, was born to this union.

During her life-time, Mrs. Scofield was active in the Congregational church which she united with in December, 1886. For twenty-five years she was superintendent of the Primary Department of the Sunday school and was a charter member of the Harmony Club.

In 1925, she was appointed organizing regent of the Lucretia Deering Chapter of the DAR, and since that time has been active in its work, holding state offices in state and allied societies. Mrs. Scofield became a member of the Shakespearean Club in 1897, and since 1907 has been a Trustee of the Osage Library.

For many years she and her husband have attended the Chautaugua Institution at Chautauqua, New York, from which she was graduated in 1930 in the same class with Thomas A. Edison.

Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Sam S. Clay, of Clarinda; two granddaughters, Miriam Patricia Clay and Gloria Clay; and a brother, Clayton W. Smith, of Duluth, Minnesota.
