CLARENCE MELLON SWEENEY
NEW HAVEN - Clarence Mellon Sweeney, 92, of rural New Haven, passed away Saturday (Jan. 20, 2001) at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Elma.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, New Haven, with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, New Haven.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 7092 State St., Osage, with the family present from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a Scripture service at 3:30 p.m. and Catholic Order of Forester Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Clarence was born Aug. 17, 1908, in Black Hawk County, the son of Edward and Winifred (Mellon) Sweeney. The family later moved to Mitchell County and farmed in the St. Ansgar area. Clarence attended rural Wardell School in St. Ansgar Township.
On Aug. 12, 1931, he was united in marriage to Alma Brandt. They lived and farmed in the New Haven area many years. Clarence was a long-time member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include his wife, Alma, of New Haven; a daughter, LaVonne Regan and her husband, James, of Avon, Ind., and her three sons, Douglas Johnson, David Johnson and Thomas Johnson; a son, Gene Sweeney and his wife, Dorothy, of New Haven and their children, Coreen, Brett, Michele, Sean, Gale and Ivy; a son, Don Sweeney and his wife, Sue, of New Haven and their children, Angie, Melissa and Chris; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Clarence in death were his parents and three brothers, Glenn, Bert and Laurence.
