"Dr. Jim" Long Died
Last Fall in Illinois

The following clipping from a paper of Danville, Ill. will interest the old-timers who remember "Dr. Jim" Long, who lived here for a time in the early "90's" when he was in the livery business for a time, also associated with the old Mitchell County Press.

"An old-time showman and retired physcian, James E. H. Long, 78, died Wednesday afternoon, October 26, 1938, in St. Elizabeth hospital, where he was entered the day before.

"Mr. Long had been a resident of Danville the past seven years, coming here from West Frankfort, Illinois. For twenty-five years he practiced medicine in Philadelphia, being associated with his brother, W. H. Long. After his retirement he took over the management of the Opera House at Dubuque, Iowa, and for four years also managed the Music Hall at Osage, Iowa.

"Born August 2, 1862, in Charleston, Indiana, he was a son of William H. and Lydia Long. He had been in ill health for the past year.

In addition to his widow, Mrs. Mary A. Long, two sisters, Mrs. Campbell MacCulloch and Mrs. Barney Gilmore, and a niece, Miss Lillian Gilmore, all of Beverly Hills, Calif., and brother-in-law, Frank C. Atherton, Clear Lake, Iowa, also survive.

"Burial was made in Memorial Park cemetery, Danville, Illinois.

Osage made its first acquaintance with "Dr. Jim" Long when he came here with one of the old-fashioned "medicine shows" that used to travel through the country, stopping for a week or so at a time in small cities and towns to provide entertainment and sell proprietary medicines.

He married Mary Atherton here, and for a few years they lived here. The "Osage Music Hall" referred to in the above clipping must mean the old Opera House, which he managed during his stay here.
