Melva M. (Kunze) Loftus 1921-2007

ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Melva M. Loftus will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Loftus, 85, of Rochester, died Friday (June 29, 2007) at Madonna Towers Health Care Center.

She was born Melva Kunze on Dec. 23, 1921, in Sleepy Eye, Minn. After graduating from high school in Sleepy Eye, she married Robert Loftus and they moved to Rochester. From 1947 to 1957, they lived in New Haven, Iowa. In 1957, they moved back to Rochester. She worked for Mayo Clinic for many years before retiring.

She was an active member of St. Pius and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, needlework and playing with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three children, Colleen (John) Mulvihill of Fountain, John (Karen) Loftus of Rochester, and Dean (Mavis) Loftus of Eau Claire, Wis.; four siblings, Lola Prigge of Grand Meadow, Hazel (Lloyd) Grams of Slayton, Evelyn (Ben) Wyatt of Rochester and Arla (Ray) Spears of Rochester; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Macken Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. The family prefers memorials to St. Pius' building fund.

Melva Kunze Loftus married Robert Michael Loftus, the son of Walter Loftus and Evelyn (Montague) Loftus. Their baby son Duane Earl Loftus is buried in the Saint Peter Catholic Cemetery, New Haven, Mitchell, Iowa. Her husband Robert Michael Loftus was born November 27, 1909 in Mitchell County, Iowa and died July 24, 1992 in Rochester, Minnesota.
