DIED SUNDAY FROM EFFECTS OF OPERATION AT DULUTH
Last Sunday morning the community was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. Mary Hegland who died that morning at Duluth, Minnesota, from the effects of a surgical operation. The operation took place Saturday noon, and she died at one thirty the next morning. She came out from the anasthetic and remained conscious until a few hours before she died.
MARIE ELIZABETH HEGLAND
Marie Elizabeth Hegland was born February 29, 1856 at St. Ansgar, Iowa.
She was baptized by Rev. Clausen March 25, the same year. She was confirmed in the Spring of 1871 by Rev. Olsen.
On January 3, 1881 she was married to Lars Jacobson Hegland. Five children were born to this union; Lela, Cleve, Thomas, Alice and Ben.
Following a sudden attack of sickness which necessitated an immediate operation, she died a few hours after the operation was performed, at Duluth, Minn. on August 19, 1917, at the age of 61 years, 5 months, and 20 days.
With the exception of Cleve Hegland, who is on the Pacific Coast, all her children were present at the funeral.
Besides her children mentioned above, she leaves to mourn her loss a host of friends and the following relatives; A.T. Tollefson, A.K. Tollefson, George Tollefson, Mrs. Belle Johnson, Mrs. T.J. Hegland and Mrs. Ben Hegland.
Her only cousin, Lauritz Thompson, was also present at the funeral.
Also present from away are: Miss Alice Bjerke, Montfort, Minn., Mrs. Bell of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Howe of Osage, Mrs. Erick Wahl of Osage, Mrs. Lauritz Thompson of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Field and family of Kensett, Iowa, B. Bergeson and J. Nelson families of Emmons, Minn, Mrs. Nick Severson and Mrs. John Knudson of Lyle, Minn., Mrs. Watson of Osage.
The funeral was conducted at the home of Mr. A.T. Tollefson, her brother, and at the N.L. Church, Rev. Waldeland officiating, August 21, 1917, and her remains were laid to rest at the Evergreen Cemetery at St. Ansgar.
