Stacyville: Funeral services were here Monday for Joseph Bawek, 84, who died at Mercy hospital at Mason City after Major surgery, Wednesday. Born at Mecklenburg, Germany, November 22, 1864; leaves 10 children, 36 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His first wife preceded him in death in 1927.

He spent his early youth in Germany and was apprenticed to a master in the shoe making business and leather trade, a business he followed all his life.

After the death of his first wife, he married Kate Wachatcke and they farmed for several years north of Stacyville. Later he left the farm to his sons to operate and built a home in Stacyville, where he had lived over 40 years, continuing at his trade on Main street. He retired a few years ago selling his business to his son Tony. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

AFTER SURGERY

Funeral services for Joseph Bawek, 84, of Stacyville were held in Visitation Church on Monday and burial was made in the church cemetery. Mr. Bawek was born at Mecklenburg, Germany, November 22, 1864. he spent his early youth in Germany and was apprenticed in the shoe and leather trade.

He was united in marriage to Kate Wachatcke and they farmed several yeawrs north of Stacyville. Later he left the farm for his sons to operate, and they moved to Stacyville where he built a home and had a shoe and leather trade for over 40 years. Mrs. Bawek died in 1927.

Mr. Bawek retired serveral yeras ago, selling his business to his son, Tony.

Surviving are then children, 36 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Joseph and Theresia (Schillinger) Bawek were married on October 23, 1888. Joseph was born November 27, 1864 and died April 1, 1949.

Theresia was born December 11, 1866 and died April 27, 1927. The Bawek's came from the Austrian-German border area and immigrated here in early 1880's with the Bernhard Schillinger Family.

Joseph set up his own harness shop and shoe repairing business in Stacyville. The Bawek's bought the Schillinger farm (Blake Farm) and lived there until building a home in town in 1914. (Christine Schilling home).

The Bawek's had ten children, Joseph Jr., Frank, Ben, Matt, Catherine (Goetzinger), Mary (Goetzinger, Dubrall), Tony, Theresa (Bretteman), Ann (Mahlmann), and Christine (Schilling).

The family business was continued on in Stacyville when Tony Bawek bought the business from his father, then Glen Bawek bought it, and it still retains the Bawek name under the present ownership of Dale Heimer.
