OSAGE, IOWA - Dorothy J. Counsell, 69, of Osage, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2000, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis W. Hanson and the Rev. Jerry Newland, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

There will be a V.F.W. Auxiliary memorial service at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

The family requests memorials be given to the Dorothy Counsell Memorial Fund.

Dorothy Jean Counsell, daughter of Frank and Clara (Cummings) Tyler, was born June 19, 1931 on a farm near Stacyville. She attended Osage Schools graduating in 1948 at the age of 16.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Gene F. Counsell on June 4, 1949, at the United Methodist Church in Osage. She dedicated her life to raising and caring for her three children and working in partnership with her husband on their farm.

After the death of her husband, Gene, on May 27, 1977, she moved to Osage and spent the following 20 years caring for her parents. She loved to bake and cook for family and friends.

Dorothy was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary of the VFW Osage Post No. 7920 holding the following offices: Local; conductress and community activities chairman, served as auxiliary president for five years. Last five and one-half years as the auxiliary treasurer and auxiliary cancer chairman. Third District level; served as color bearer for many years. Third District Secretary and chairman in these programs; Americanism, Youth Activities, Community Activities, Safety, National Home, and Rehabilitation.

The last 13 years she has served as District Treasurer and the last few years as Deputy Chief of Staff for the Third District. Department wise, Dorothy served as Department Color Bearer #2 for many years. She was State Publicity Chairman for two years, her first year as Publicity Chairman; she took first place national award on the best press book. She received the National President's Plate.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Michael and his wife, Colleen, of Gainesville, Fla., and Robert "Bob" and his wife, Donna, of Osage; daughter, Jane Wageman and her husband, Tom, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Stephanie and Jessica Wageman, and Dusty and Darin Counsell; sister, Marian Rust and her husband, Allen, of St. Ansgar; one brother, William "Bill" Tyler and his wife, Mary Jo, of Janesville, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, on May 27, 1977; her parents; and a grandson, Danny Counsell on March 20, 1990.
