THELMA WALSTAD BIRUM JENSEN

OSAGE, IOWA - Thelma Walstad Birum Jensen, 87, of Osage, died Wednesday (May 10, 2000) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Thelma was born July 25, 1912, in Osage, the daughter of Hans and Anna (Rinnan) Walstad. She attended schools in Osage and graduated from Osage High School and remained a resident of Osage throughout her life.

Thelma was united in marriage to Roy "Toby" Birum on Oct. 1, 1934. He passed away in July of 1972. Thelma worked with Roy and his parents, Fred and Lydia Birum, in the Birum Café in Osage. She also worked at the Kane Drug Store and the Daylight Store, both in Osage.

Thelma was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent at the Immanual Lutheran Church for 18 years. She was a faithful member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Thelma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president for a number of years.

On May 7, 1981, Thelma was united in marriage to Norval Jensen at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. In her younger years, Thelma enjoyed playing golf at Sunny Brae Country Club in Osage, where she made a hole in one on No. six.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St. in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home in Osage, (515) 732-3706, and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Thelma is survived by her husband of 19 years, Norval Jensen, of Osage; a daughter, Penny Maas and her husband, Leo, of Claremont, Minn.; two sons, David Birum and his wife, Maureen, of Osage and Frederick Birum and his wife, Margarita, of Stewartville, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Siebels and Gertrude Weinschenck, both of Osage; also several nieces and nephews.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Anna Walstad; her first husband, Roy "Toby" Birum; one sister, Harriet Walstad; and one brother, Ernest Walstad.
