MARY MARIE BERGE

OSAGE, IOWA - Mary Marie Berge, 62, of Osage, died Tuesday (March 14, 2000) at her home of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash Street in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., in Osage and one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in Mary's memory.

Mary was born Mary Marie Mitchell, the sixth child of Brodie Barlow Mitchell and Bertha Florence (Carrison) Mitchell, on Feb. 20, 1938, in Martinsville, Ill. She was raised there to the age of 5 when the family moved to the Osage area. Mary graduated in 1957 from Osage High School.

On Oct. 15, 1960, she married Arthur Berge. They made their home in Osage and raised two boys, Paul and David. She was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Mary began her career after high school working for Home Trust and Savings Bank as a bookkeeper and teller. After taking time to raise her boys, her career interests brought her back to bookkeeping and tax preparing.

She held several positions locally with businesses including Roger Hackman CPA, Tesch's Paints and Sundries, Kratchmer & Kloberdanz, and others. She began her own bookkeeping and tax preparation business in 1986 and she served as the city of Osage treasurer and the municipal utilities treasurer until her illness prevented her from continuing.

Mary will be remembered by her family and others for her positive outlook and good-natured personality. Mary was a loving wife and mother making occasions memorable with her traditions for the holidays and other special times of the year.

She loved to watch birds and enjoyed the outdoors. She took pride in her flowers and rose gardens. She was steadfast in her encouragement and support of her family and was thoughtful of others.

Mary is survived by her husband, Arthur Berge, of Osage; her two sons, Paul Berge, of Ames and David Berge, of Grinnell; two brothers, Clinton Mitchell and his wife, Cleo, of Osage and Lester Mitchell and his wife, Oma, of Red Oak, Texas; two sisters, Florence Werner and her husband, Clayton, of Osage and Dorothy Ehlke and her husband, William, of Arlington, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Lloyd and Charles.
