CURTIS M. FORBES

OSAGE, IOWA - Curtis M. Forbes, 91, died Sunday (Dec. 17, 2000) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Eastside Cemetery in Dodgeville, Wis.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Osage.

Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis was born on January 7, 1909, on a farm near Dodgeville, Wisconsin, the son of Samuel and Alma "Queen" (Conkle) Forbes. He grew up in the Dodgeville area.

Curtis married Norma Fern Edmunds on Feb. 11, 1927, at Galena, Illinois. They made their home in Dodgeville, Avoca and Bridgeport, Wis., where he owned and operated cheese factories. He built and operated the Holiday Motel in Prairie du Chien. They moved to Osage in January of 1955. Curtis was cheesemaker at the Rock Creek Cheese Factory at Meroa near Osage, retiring in 1974.

As a youth, Curtis played the fiddle and violin. Following his retirement, Curtis became known for his playing. He played at churches and nursing homes. Curtis won numerous contests for playing the fiddle at Yankton, S.D. He played at the Nordic Fest in Decorah. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage.

Curtis is survived by two daughters, Arlyne Seim and her husband, Larry, of Decorah, and Eunice Hobkirk and her husband, Donald, of Hudson; a son, Curtis Forbes Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Manawa, Wis.; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma Forbes in 1997; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene Forbes and his wife, Joy, and John Forbes and his wife, Rita; one sister, Alma Smith; and three brothers, Harland Forbes, Gordon Forbes, and Orrin Forbes.
