DIES IN HAWAII PLANE CRASH

Warner Hagemann, Jr., 24,
Formerly from St. Ansgar,
Victim.

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Word has been received here of the death of Warner, Hagemann, Jr., 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hagemann, in a plane crash at Wailuku, Maui, Territory of Hawaii.

Mr. Hagemann’s parents are well known here and his mother is the former Mollie Smith, daughter of John Smith, who built the Bernstein hardware building, starting the hardware business here.

KILLS 3 FLIERS

Planes Hit Mountain
In Rain, Burn;
Officers Are Victims

Wailuku, Maui, T.H. - June 25 -- Three Navy airplanes crashed high on Haleakala Mountain last night killing three U.S. Marine pilots.

The dead were identified as Lieut. William M. Ferris, Lakewood, N.J., Werner G. Hagemann, Kansas City, Kansas, and Clyde H. Story, no address.

Witnesses said the planes had passed over Wailuku, flying in close formation at a height of about 5000 feet. A heavy rain was falling . . . [witnesses] heard a violent explosion followed by flames on the mountainside.

A searching party headed by Lieut. Thomas South, U.S.N., reached the scene two hours later. He said all three planes had struck the mountain and one was burned almost beyond recognition. It was first believed only one plane had crashed.

MARINE FLYERS KILLED AS PLANES HIT PEAK

Honolulu, June 25, (AP)-- Three U.S. Marine flyers, flying in three navy planes in formation through a blinding rain, were killed last night. They struck the west side of Mt. Haleakala, 8000 foot extinct volcano, on Maui Island.

The dead: First Lieutenant William M. Ferris, Lakewood, N.J.; Second Lieutenant Warner Hagemann Jr., Kansas City, Kansas; and Second Lieutenant Clyde H. Story, Address not available.

All three planes were demolished. Heavy rain over the mountain had reduced visibility to zero.
