STACYVILLE, IOWA - John N. Streit, 84, of Stacyville died at the Stacyville Nursing Home on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Visitation Catholic Church at Stacyville. Father John Moser will officiate with the Visitation Church Choir and family members providing the music. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with a Rosary at 5 p.m. and Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

John Nicholas Streit was born on May 25, 1926, to Nicholas and Rose (Walrich) Streit at Stacyville. John was the fourth of five children. He attended Visitation School at Stacyville, graduating in 1944. He served a tour of duty in the service of his country in the Korean Conflict and returned home in 1948.

John married Bonita Koenigs at Sacred Heart Church in Meyer, Iowa. They farmed for over 50 years, first near Stacyville, then near Johnsburg, Minn., and ultimately they purchased a farm near Stacyville, where they lived for the next 40 years. On each of these farms, three children were born to them: David, Mary Rose (who died of cancer in 1985, and her husband Ronald Smith followed her in death in 1998), Robert, Linda, Duane, Janet, Judy, Karen and John.

John loved the land and was ahead of his time in trying to employ sustainable farming methods. He was inventive in his workshop and his design of a bin-moving trailer was in demand regionally.
Those who knew him recognized his interest in history and politics and chuckled at his dry and self-effacing wit.

He was a member of the St. John's Church Choir in Johnsburg and had a lifelong love of music which remained vibrant until his death. While they lived near Johnsburg, John enjoyed the great honor of being chosen the "Outstanding Young Farmer" for Mower County. He and Bonita were privileged to receive the award at a banquet in Moorehead, Minn.

John was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Catholic Order of Foresters.

He is survived by: his wife, Bonita Streit, Stacyville; children David Streit, Dallas, Texas; Robert (Carol) Streit, Boone; Linda (Ian) Davies, Longmont, Colo.; Dr. Duane (Beth) Streit, Carroll; Janet Streit, Libertyville, Ill.; Dr. Judy Streit, Iowa City; Karen (Michael) Bauer, Weissbach, Germany; and John (Melissa) Streit, Minnetonka, Minn.; grandchildren, Stephanie, Jennifer and Jessica Streit, Michael Smith, John and Nicholas Streit, Natalie and Christian Hughes, Clarissa Davies, Marie Bauer and Peter Streit; his brother, Leo Streit, and sister, Therese Johnson, and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Marcella and Esther, and his daughter, Mary Rose.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements, (641) 713-4920.
