OSAGE, IOWA — Betty M. Bauman, 72, of Osage, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at her home. Betty was born on September 17, 1926, the daughter of L. Verl and Natalie (Newton) Heller. At six months of age, they moved to the family farm, where she resided until graduating from high school. She attended Grant rural school and graduated from the Orchard High School in 1943.

After graduation, she worked at the Scott Store in Osage, where she worked full time and then part-time for 22 years. It was here she met her husband to be. They were married on June 16, 1946 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June of 1996.

They were the parents of one son, Steven. She also worked for a time in the Osage School Lunch program. From February 1970 until July 1973, they owned and operated Bauman's Hobbies and Crafts in Hampton, Iowa. They then returned to the home at 902 Oak Street in Osage they had owned since 1950. Betty was an Avon sales representative for 25 years. Betty was known as a craft person and sometimes taught lessons. She loved flowers and was known for her arrangements at the local Fair. She was awarded many ribbons including 5 best of Show. She and John loved to travel and enjoyed many world fairs and international flower shows. In retirement they enjoyed many motor coach tours.

She was a long time member of First Baptist Church and served faithfully on boards and committees, as long as health permitted she was a member of Ann Judson circle. She also enjoyed serving on the Mitchell County Concert Board.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 1999 at the First Baptist Church in Osage, with Pastor Jerry Newland officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the family present from 5 until 8 p.m.

She is survived by her husband, John, of Osage; one son, Steven and wife, Eleanor, of Emmons, Minnesota; one brother, Bob Heller and wife, Verla, of Charles City; two sisters-in-law, Linda Heller, of Osage, and Arlene Garden, of Colwell, Iowa and husband, Ralph Garden, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Ben Bauman, of Osage; three stepgrandchildren and their spouses, Monica and Scott Gordon, of Lakeville, Minn., Kevin Levorson and Cary, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Darren Levorson and Cammi, of Emmons, Minn.; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents and one brother, Kenneth Heller.
