THINK DRIVER FELL ASLEEPOSAGE, IOWA – Orrin Gene Weldin, 27 was fatally injured abut 1:30 a.m. Sunday in a truck accident a mile east and two and a quarter miles north of Mitchell, on the Willie Valasek farm.
According to Deputy Sheriff Lewis Haberkorn young Weldin apparently fell asleep at the wheel of the truck, it veered to the left, sheared off a mail box, then went diagonally across the road to the right side, down a four foot embankment and into a grove of trees.
The truck was wedges so tightly in the grove that Deputy Haberkorn and ambulance men worked more than an hour to extricate Weldin.
He remained unconscious until his death at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City. Weldin’s brother, Jerry, 16, and a friend, Wayland Adams, were following a short distance behind and summoned help.
Orin was born on a farm May 21, 1923, to Erven “Erv” and Charlotte Frances (Michaelis) Weldin. He attended Fairview school. He served in the navy five years during World War II, as a gunner’s mate first class, on an LST. He was discharged in 1946 and remained at home assisting in farming and truck gardening.
Survivors include his parents six brothers; William, Hugh, Glenn, Charlees and Jerry, all of Osage; Wayne, Riceville, and four sisters; Mrs. Duane Larson St. Ansgar; Mrs. Margery Curtis, Chicago; Mrs. Albert Wieland and Mrs. Charlotte Adams, both of Osage.
