STACYVILLE, IOWA - Marie Louise Koenigs, 99, of Stacyville died Wednesday (Sept. 15, 2010) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Meyer, with the Rev. Monsignor John W. Hemann officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meyer. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.
Marie Louise (Bissen) Koenigs was born March 4, 1911, to John and Elizabeth (Schmitz) Bissen. She grew up on their stateline farm northwest of Stacyville. She had two younger siblings, Regina and Arthur. Her early years were spent attending St. Johns School at Johnsburg, Minn., and she completed her education at Good Counsel Academy in Mankato, Minn.
She married Paul Koenigs on Nov. 22, 1932. They began their married life on a farm near Meyer. To this union were born five children, John, Deo, Roman, Jerry and Elaine. During their 42-year marriage they farmed and lived in the Meyer area.
Paul and Marie made their retirement home on an acreage just north of Meyer. It was a happy time, free from the chores and responsibilities of farming. Marie chose to stay there after Paul passed away in 1975. She was close to her family and enjoyed the drop-in visits of her children and grandchildren, especially the after church gathers on Sunday morning.
Marie was a member of the Sacred Heart Church at Meyer and an active member of the Christian Mothers and Rosary Society. She took her turn as president during the 1950s.
Besides the activities of housewife and mother, Marie enjoyed gardening, quilting, shopping with friends, dancing and parties, traveling, fishing trips and picnics.
At the age of 87, she had the courage to buy a new home and move to Stacyville. It was her first "in-town" experience and she loved being close to the action. Her neighbors were also close friends, and they delighted in getting together to go to Mass, morning coffees and in the evenings just to watch the sun go down. Marie's next home was to be the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, where she has been lovingly cared for the past five years. While there she was seldom without visits from her children and grandchildren. She kept track of all the happenings in each family and had a remarkable memory of names of even the additions to the family.
Grandma Marie will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Koenigs; her parents, John and Elizabeth Bissen; a brother, Arthur; her sister, Regina May; a son, John; a grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons, Deo (Joan) Koenigs, Roman (Ruth) Koenigs, Jerry (Sandy) Koenigs; a daughter, Elaine Ramberg (Dan), and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Koenigs. Also 20 grandchildren, Nancy, Joe, Richard and Russell Koenigs; Mark, Jim, Harry, Greg, Paul Koenigs and Lisa Heimer; Carmel Scott, Kevin, Chris and Susan Koenigs; Daniel, Todd and Mike Koenigs, Jennifer Sullivan; Cara Jones and Bill Ramberg; 48 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include two sisters-in-law, Julia Koenigs and Mary Koenigs, and numerous nephews and nieces.
