John Alanson Buckman was born in December 1860

John was studying law at the Upper Iowa University at Fayette when his father Charles died. This made it necessary for him to give up his schooling to help support the family of twelve children. After teaching ten terms in the "red school" north of Castalia, John decided to venture west.

In the spring of 1884 John, his wife Emma Arvilla (Mooney) Bucknam and a small son, Ray arrived in Mitchell County. The one hundred twenty acres they had bought were one mile south of Little Cedar. There were no buildings or fences. A straw shed was built for the livestock, and a few rooms were built for the family. Later, other buildings were built.

Their four children grew up on this farm. Ray married Inez Smith, Pearl married Robert Emerson, and ethel married Leo Church. Florence May lived only one month.

In 1910 or 1911 John and Emma, Ethel and Eva, the youngest child, moved to Osage. They bought and operated a grocery store on the corner of 8th and Main Streets.

John Bucknam died in 1933 (October 14) of a cerebral hemorrhage. Emma died in 1948.
