FUNERAL RITES HELD SATURDAY FOR F. GERHART

UNION TOWNSHIP FARMER DIES SUDDENLY AT HIS HOME ON MARCH 21

Fred Gerhart, son of John and Elizabeth Gerhart, was born February 4, 1867, in Union township. He spent his whole life on and about the original Gerhart farm. Just at dawn on March 21, 1939, when dressed and ready for the day's tasks, he was quickly and unexpectedly summoned by his Heavenly Father to come and begin that beautiful first day of spring in another land. He died at the age of 72 years, one month and 17 days.

In 1893 he was married to Lily Decker, who preceded him in death in March, 1900. Four sons born to this union died in infancy. On September 7, 1909, he was married to Mina Barwind, who after a beautiful companionship of 29 years survives him. Also surviving are two sons, Grant and Harold; two sisters, Laura and Maggie; two brothers, George and Adam; one niece, Mrs. Leona Dankert; one nephew, Ren Anderson; also numerous relatives and friends.

Fred Gerhart was always interested in his church. He served as a deacon for nine years and as church treasurer for 27 years. He gave unselfishly of his time and his money and his service. He attended his church with rigid regularity. He was also a public spirited man interested in all projects that were for the betterment of his home and community.

He served as township trustee for years and was acting in that capacity at the time of his death. Thus the home, the church, the community have had to part with a servant of not many words but instead many unselfish deeds. In all his dealings with business associates, friends and neighbors he dealt with absolute honesty. Above all was his touching spirit of kindliness toward little children.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house and 2:30 at the Union Presbyterian church, Rev. A. Proett officiating. Roy Witt sang two solos accompanied by Mrs. John Goplerud. Burial was in the family lot nearby. Pallbearers were H.D. Mundt, George Zeigler, Jake Clausen, Adam Decker, John Markow and Carl T. Johnson.
