John Collins Patterson

TOETERVILLE, IOWA — John Patterson, 73, died Thursday at his farm home northeast of Toeterville.

Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Union Township Presbyterian Church northeast of Toeterville. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery with Schroeder & Houg Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, in charge.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Patterson, he was born August 27, 1890, at Morning Sun. He was married to Velma Rutt Feb. 18, 1914. They farmed in the Otranto and Union Township area the last 50 years.

Surviving are his wife, four sons, John Jr., Donald, Darrell and Max, all in the Toeterville area; three daughters, Mrs. Otto (Neva) Nelson, Rose Creek; Mrs. Clarence (Helen) Debnar, Greene; Mrs. Walter (Lois) Benish, Austin, Minnesota, 21 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

John Collins Patterson was born August 27, 1890 at Morning Sun, Iowa; his parents were Samuel and Lizzie (Wells) Patterson. He married Velma Blanche Rutt (who was born December 12, 1890) on February 18, 1914 at Columbus Junction, Iowa.

They came to Lyle, Minnesota following their wedding where they began farming the spring of 1914 and they continued to farm in Otranto and Union Township (Mitchell Co.) until their retirement in 1959.

John and Velma lived on their farm north of Toeterville, Iowa until their deaths, John in 1964 and Velma in 1969.

They were the parents of nine children: Neva (Mrs. Otto Nelson) of Lyle, Minnesota who was born April 24, 1917; Donald, also living at Lyle, was born March 28, 1918; John, of rural St. Ansgar, was born May 28, 1919; Merle (April 11, 1921-February 16, 1922); Max, Route 4, Osage, was born April 7, 1922; Darrell, of St. Ansgar, was born July 21, 1923; Kenneth (August 27, 1925 - March 12, 1926); Helen (Mrs. Clarence Debner). of Marble Rock, Iowa, was born December 27, 1926, and Lois (Mrs. Walter Benesh). of Austin, Minnestoa, was born July 31, 1929.
