OSAGE, IOWA — Gary Clinton Smith, 54, of Bradenton, Florida and formerly of Osage, died suddenly February 12, 1999 in Bradenton. Graveside Inurnment services were held at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Bay Pines, Florida. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Osage.

Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Gary was born August 10, 1944 in Osage, the son of Loren and Martha (Christiansen) Smith.

He was retired from the U.S. Navy, where he served during the Vietnam era. He received the Navy Unit Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 400, Bradenton, Florida, and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Survived by two sons, Gary Clinton Smith Jr. and Benjamin Joseph Smith, of Bradenton; mother, Martha L. Smith, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Janice (Smith) Benttine and husband, Lester, of Osage and their children, Wayne and Cynthia; a brother, Dennis Smith, of Osage and his children, Amanda and Jennifer.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Loren; and grandparents.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. There will be no visitation. A time of fellowship and a light lunch will follow the memorial service at Our Savior's. Graveside inurnment services were held at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Bay Pines, Fla.
