Hans Larsen Staff was born in Ringsaker, Hedemarken, Norway, in 1825, the son of Lars Pederson and Kare Hansdatter who were farmers there. Hans was a master sergeant in the Ringsaker County Company for 13 years. He chose to leave a promising military career to come to America where he felt opportunities and conditions are much more free.
Anne (Anna) Hove (Haavi) Staff was born in Ringsaker, Norway, on February 26, 1839, the daughter of Andres Gulbransen and Guarn Michelsdatter (Who lived on a small place on a farm called Aaseneie). She came to America in 1858 and lived in LaCorsse County, Wisconsin for a few year.
On December 30, 1860, she was married to Hans Staff at Neshonoe, Wisconsin, by Reverend A. Frederickson, a Lutheran pastor, possibly at Halfway Creek Lutheran CHurch. Coming to Iowa, they purchased a farm near Meroa in Cedar Township. This farm was later purchased by a son, John Staff, and later by his son, Lloyd Staff.
Hans died in Nebraska in 1886 where he had gone to homestead a claim. A son, Haakon, also died there. Anne died at the home farm on January 13, 1919, where she had lived for 50 years. Hans and Anne are buried in Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery near Meroa.
Hans and Anne were the parents of seven children. One son died in infancy and Haakon died in Nebraska on land he was homesteading. Their remaining children were: Carl; John, Wilhelm, who married Clara Olava Winnor and had five children; Emma; Bertha Marie, who married Halver Tinglestad and had one son; and Laura, who married Oscar Ludvig Krogstad and had ten children.
