OSAGE, IOWA - Matt Williams, age 38, of Osage, died Sunday (July 25, 2010) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a courageous battle against ALS.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 833 Ash Street, Osage. For visitation, relatives and friends are asked to enter the church through the fellowship hall entrance.
Matt was born on March 8, 1972, in Osage, the son of Robert and Ann (Voaklander) Williams. He graduated from Osage High School in 1990, and attended Waldorf College. He then transferred to North Iowa Area Community College where he received his associate's degree. Matt was employed at Wallace Computer Services in Osage.
On June 8, 1996, he was united in marriage to Val Goodale at Sacred Heart Church in Osage. Matt and Val then opened Flowers by Val Floral and Greenhouses, working together in the flower shop until Matt started working for Pepsi America in Mason City. He was transferred with Pepsi to Fargo, North Dakota and worked there for a year before returning to the Mason City office. In the fall of 2005, he started working for Leading Edge Ford in Osage.
Matt was diagnosed with ALS in January of 2006, after which he retired to spend time with his family. He played baseball for the North Stars and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and camping. Matt coached his children's ball teams and loved following them in all of their activities. He checked with his kids daily to see if they had done their push-ups and sit-ups.
Matt is survived by his wife and children, Val, Emma, Zach and Nolan Williams of Osage; his parents, Bob and Ann Williams of Osage; his sister, Theresa Shoger, of Northwood, and children, Alex, Maddy and Peyton; his sister, Joan (Steve) Jacobs of Osage, and children, Trey (Amber) Jacobs and their children, Isabelle and Addison; Cory (Robyn) Jacobs and their son, Madden; Allison Jacobs and Rachael Jacobs; his brother, Brian (Kristy) Williams of Waukee; his sister, Amy (Rob) Ring of Osage, and children, Isaac, Caleb and Brianna; his mother-in-law, Cindy (Kurt) Brandau, Osage; his sister-in-law, Shelly Goodale and children Jacey and Jalynn of Osage; his grandparents-in-law, Kenny and Ruby Goodale of Osage; and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Bob Goodale; his brother-in-law, Doug Shoger; his maternal and paternal grandparents.
