Gilbert Horgen, one of the best-known and respected residents of Osage, passed away at his home Monday, after an illness that dated from last February. He had been slowly failing for a number of years, but rallied during the summer months. Five weeks ago he again began to decline, and death came early Monday morning, October 6, [1931].

He suffered from high blood pressure and heart trouble. At his next birthday he would have been 73 years of age.

Gilbert Horgen was born in Hordalen, Norway, February 2, 1859. He was united in marriage with Ingeborg Paulsrud at Gran, Hadeland, Norway, and in April of the same year he and his bride immigrated from Norway to America.

They settled in Clermont, Clayton County, Iowa, where they resided for 5 years. In 1886 they came to Mitchell County, where they have continued to reside.

For two years they lived on the Ole Peterson farm in Rock Township; then they purchased a few acres one and a half miles south west of Orchard. Here they cleared the ground of timber and built a home in which they lived for twenty-two years.

In October 1910, they came to Osage, and purchased the Bacon place on south Sixth Street, which was their home until they exchanged homes with the Martin Havigs, three years ago.

Besides being a farmer, Mr. Horgen was an able bricklayer, plasterer, and mason. Many of the buildings on the street, and residences, show his expert work. Mr. Horgen built a good many of the fire-places in the homes in this vicinity, and showed an unusual artistic gift in their construction.

He was a staunch member of the church; a charter member of the Osage Lutheran Church, and for many years had been a member of the board of deacons in that church.

He is survived by his wife and the following children; Henry, New Hampton; Melvin, Charles City; Edwin, Osage; Mrs. Elmer Isaacs, Osage; Ingwald, Wausau, Wisconsin; Gilman, Minneapolis; Mrs. Emil Lincke, Osage; Oscar, Charles City; Clarence, Wausau, Wisconsin. besides twenty-three grandchildren. One daughter preceded the father in death.

Funeral services were held at the Champion Funeral Home Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., and in the Osage Lutheran Church at 2 p.m., in charge of the Reverend T. P. Solem. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery.
