Mrs. Emily Scofield Died Saturday At Advanced Age 89

Emily Lorain Stacy was born June 9, 1842 at Hudson, Walwort County, Wisconsin. She was the second of five children born to Dr. John and his wife, Laura (West) Stacy. She had three brothers, Milton, Skiff, Edmund West and William Wallace, and a sister, Adah Louisa, all of whom have preceded her in death.

In 1835 Dr. John Stacy and his wife left New York to try their fortunes in the then far west territory of Wisconsin, making their first home at Hudson, Walworth County, where all of their children, except William Wallace, were born. Here they bought a farm, built a log house, and began the life of pioneers, a Yoke of oxen for a team and a cart with immense wheels was their only conveyance. Here Emily's father was a farmer, doctor, and teacher - teaching the first select school in Burlington, Wisconsin. At the time of his death, he was superintendent of schools and county supervisor.

Funeral services were conducted from the Champion Funeral Home Monday, June 15, 1931, Reverend Nelson C. Dreier officiating.

After her father's death in 1856, her mother carried on the farm with Milton's help. In the schools of Janesville Emily received her early education. None of us were privileged to have known her then. But Mrs. Annie E. Sweney went to school with her in Wisconsin, and remembered her as a sweet, bright, active girl. In her young womanhood she taught school in Rock County, Wisconsin.

She was married August 29, 1851, to Franklin A. Scofield, and that fall came west to Cedar Falls, where Mr. Scofield conducted a grocery store. In the fall of 1865 the located in Mitchell, Iowa, moving to Osage in 1873.

Four children were born to Franklin A. and Emily Lorain Scofield: Fred Milton, who was born in Fulton, Rock County, Wisconsin, Frank Hubert and Edwin John, born in Mitchell, Iowa; and Herbert Homer, born in Osage, Iowa. Frank Hubert died in infancy and Herbert Homer died January 10, 1931, at his home in Chicago.

During her residence in Mitchell, Iowa, she sang in the church choir. She united with the Congregational Church at Osage January 6, 1878. For a few years around 1888 she belonged to the Chautauque Circle and finished the reading course. She was alert and active and kept abreast of the times until her affliction of deafness grew upon her and she gradually withdrew from active social life.

Mrs. Scofield's deafness shut her out from the world for many years, and no one knew so well as her children and relatives what an affliction this was to her. She had the tenderest care of a loving husband as long as he lived. His death occurred in August, 1908. Since then her children have provided every want and attention they could bestow to make life as pleasant as possible for her. For twelve years Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lezotte lived in her home and cared for her, and for the last twelve years her son, Fred Milton Scofield, and his wife have ministered to her every want and lovingly cared for her in her increasing feebleness. She was a loving wife and a wonderful mother, as all of her sons can testify. She died at the advanced age of 89 years.

Mrs. Scofield Rites
Are Held at Osage

OSAGE, June 16.—Funeral services for Mrs. Emily Scofield, who died at her home Saturday, were held at Champion Funeral Home Monday, conducted by her pastor the Rev. N. C. Dreier.

Mrs. Scofield was born in a log house at Hudson Wis., June 9, 1842. She was second of five children. Two brothers, Milton S. and William Wallace were in business here many years. The elder, Milton S., was a partner of her husband, Franklin A. Scofield

She was married Aug. 29, 1861, and in 1865 located at Mitchell, coming to Osage in 1873. Two children survive, Fred Milton and Edwin John of Osage.
