Clarence Bartle, a former resident of Churdan, was killed Saturday, February 11, in a two car crash on Interstate No. 80 west of Davenport. He was traveling alone when another driver made a mistake of entering at an exit to the highway and resulted in a head on collission.
He had visited his sister Blanche and family in Des Moines February 3 and 4 and then had driven to Illinois to see his daughter and from there to New Orleans where he attended the Mardi Gras.
On his return trip he had planned to stop in Des Moines with his sisters family, enroute to Sioux City where he was employed by the Illinois Central R.R. Co. and resided with his son Vincent who is a student at Morningside college.
Clarence Bartle was born November 2, 1917 in Minneapolis, Minn., son of Everette V. and Effie Bartle. He died February 11, 1961, at the age of 43 years, three months and nine days.
He moved to Churdan with his parents in 1930, attended the Methodist Church here and the Churdan School, graduating with the class of 1935. He was later employed by the C.M. & St. P. and Illinois Central R.R. Companies.
His father was depot agent here and his sons both learned the telegraph work here.
Those who preceded him in death were his parents and his brother, Vincent.
Surviving include his son, Vincent of Sioux City and his daughter, Karen of Marseilles, Illinois, also his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Cronk of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday February 15, at the Chapel in Osage. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery. His sister, Mrs. Cronk, was unable to attend the funeral.

#2:Osage, Iowa - Funeral services for Clarence J. Bartle, 43, were held at the Champion Funeral Home Wednesday noon. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
He was killed Saturday evening a mile west of Walcott. He had been employed at Sioux City as a telegraph operator.
Survivors include a son, Vincent, 18, who lived with his father; a daughter, Karen 13 who lived with his estranged wife in Marseilles, Illinois, and a sister, Blanche Cronk, Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs Everett Bartle and a brother, also an accident victim.
