Died Sunday After Lingering Illness

Mrs. A. H. Pettit, a very well known former Osage woman, died at Haines City, Florida, Sunday, March 8, after a long illness. A funeral service was held at the home in Haines City Tuesday. At a later date the ashes will be sent to Osage for burial in the family lot.

Mame* Francis Packer was born February 7, 1855, at Richmond, Illinois, and her girlhood days were spent there. In 1874 she came to Osage and lived here with Dr. and Mrs. David Cutler.

On August 17, 1876, she was united in marriage to Alvah N. Pettit and to their union two children were born - Claude, now living in Osage, and Esther, now Mrs. Lisle W. Smith, of Haines City. Both of these, along with their father, survive.

Mrs. Pettit was active in church and social affairs during her residence here, and is remembered for her helpful service.

Eighteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Pettit and their daughter moved to Florida, and have resided there since, returning to Osage each summer for a few months. In recent years, however, Mrs. Pettit's ill health made it necessary to discontinue these northern visits.

Memorial Service
for Mrs. Alvah N.
Pettit Yesterday

The Reverend Nelson C. Dreier conducted, at the Claude Pettit home, a beautiful memorial service Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Alvah N. Pettit, who passed away March 10, [1931] at Haines City, Florida.

Following the funeral service at Haines City March 12, the body of Mrs. Pettit was cremated, and the ashes shipped to Osage; and during the memorial service they (in a bronze, casket-shaped container, with a handsomely engraved top) stood on a walnut table, on the exact spot where, fifty five years ago, she had been married.

The service was very brief, opened and ended with prayers, beautiful in diction, sentiment and meaning, with some appropriate selected readings and comments by the speaker. The P. E. O. was present in a body, and there were many other old friends.

After the company had left the house, the family bore the remains to the cemetery and another brief service of prayer was held there.

Neither the husband, nor the daughter, Mrs. Esther Smith, were able to accompany the remains to Osage, due to sickness.
