Merlyn Chester Counsell

Merlyn Chester Counsell Resident of Berkeley Died 11/ 24/09, at the age of 89. He was born 10/10/1920, in Osage, IA, son of Harry & Edna Counsell. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with distinction in the Pacific Theater, receiving several awards, including two Bronze Stars.

He graduated from UC Berkeley in Aug, 1949, and married Barbara Anne Nicholas on 9/2/1949. They made their home in Berkeley, CA, where they reared their three children, Frederick, Melissa & Stuart. Preceding him in death were his parents & brother, Gene. Merlyn is survived by "Nicky", his wife of 60 years, brothers Kenneth & Virgil, sons Fred & Stuart, daughter Melissa & 5 grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held 2pm, Wednesday, December 2nd, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 1501 Washington Ave, Albany, CA 94706. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Alban's Memorial Fund.

Merlyn Chester Counsell, of Berkeley, California, died November 24, 2009, at the age of 89. Graveside inurnment services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2010, at the Osage Cemetery with Rev. Wendy Abrahamson officiating. Following services, there will be time for refreshments and to greet the family at the Osage V.F.W. Club in Osage. In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe given to the Osage VFW Post 7920, 3693 Hwy 218, Osage, IA 50461.

He was born October 10, 1920, in Osage, Iowa, son of Harry and Edna Counsell. The family lived many years on the four mile corner east of town. He graduated with the Osage High School Class of 1938. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with distinction in the Pacific Theater, receiving several awards, including two Bronze Stars. He was a proud lifetime member of the Osage VFW Post 7920. He graduated from UC Berkeley in August, 1949, and married Barbara Anne Nicholas on September 2, 1949. They made their home in Berkeley, CA, where they reared their three children, Frederick, Melissa and Stuart. Until recent years, Merlyn made annual visits to Osage with his family and then his wife.

Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Gene.

Merlyn is survived by Barbara (Nicky), his wife of 60 years, brothers Kenneth and Virgil, sons Fred and Stuart, daughter Melissa, and five grandchildren.
