Mother, Son Died
in Road CollisionMitchell County recorded it's first and second fatalities of 1980 following a two-vehicle accident Friday morning.
Diane Decklever, 20, of Osage, and her three-year-old son Jason Peterson, were killed when Decklever attempted to pass two westbound cars on Highway 9 and collided with an eastbound tandem straight truck driven by Verner Fenrich, 52, of Grove City, Minnesota.
Decklever was on her way to class at NIACC.
The mother and son were pinned in the wreckage for 90 minutes. Jason died instantly and his mother was taken to Mitchell County Memorial Hospital and then to St. Mary's in Rochester where she died of head injuries.
The car was a total loss and the truck sustained about $4,000 damage. Hilda Fenrich, a passenger in the truck, was taken to Memorial Hospital with back injuries.
The accident was investigated by Sheriff Richard Jahnel and Deputy Curt Younker.
Obituary
Funeral rites were held Monday afternoon for Diane Decklever and her son, Jason Peterson, with the Reverend Kit Belk, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in charge of the services at the Champion Funeral Home. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
Diane Lynn Decklever was born January 25, 1960, in Osage, the daughter of Wayne and Marcella Grap Decklever. She attended the Osage schools. She was married to Darwin Peterson in 1975. At the time of her death she was attending North Iowa Area Community College.
Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Marcella Fenske, her father, Wayne Decklever of Phoenix; two brothers, Bob and Mike Decklever; one sister. Mrs. Dave Tillotson (Carol) of St. Ansgar; and four grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Alton Grap of Sedona, Arizona, and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Decklever of Osage.
Jason Peterson was born in Iowa City November 19, 1976, the son of Darwin and Diane Decklever Peterson.
Surviving are his father, Darwin Peterson of Osage; grandparents, Mrs. Marcella Fenske of Osage, Wayne Decklever of phoenix and his paternal grandparents; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Grap and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Decklever.
