Naurice Marion Nesset was born October 29, 1909, on a farm near St. Ansgar, Iowa, to Lena and George** Johnson. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1926 and from St. Olaf College in 1931. In 1935 he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin and began work as a chemist for Baxter Laboratories in Glenview, Illinois, where he rose to the position of vice-president in charge of research and development. In 1955 he left Baxter to devote full time to his work as Chairman of the Board of Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Chicago and to the planning and building of a new hospital in Park Ridge. On December 24, 1959, Lutheran General Hospital opened its doors and from then until his retirement Naurice served the hospital in various leadership rolls, finally as CEO from 1970-1979.

Through the years he was active in the church: a charter member, council member, and chairman of the building committee at St. Mark Lutheran in Mt. Prospect; president of Lutheran Homefinding; member of the Board of Regents, St. Olaf College; consultant for Lutheran Social Services of Illinois.

Naurice received numerous award and recognitions including: and award from the Navy for work on blood transfusions and intravenous solutions, the Masada Award from the Israel Bond Committee, & the naming of the outpatient clinic at Lutheran General Hospital in his honor.

In 1932 he married Thelma Kompelien. In 1945 the couple and their three sons, Burton, David, and Philip, moved to a farm near Palatine, where the family spent its growing up years and where the boys learned from their parents a love of the land and an appreciation of farming as a way of life. Naurice was to remain actively involved and passionately interested in farming until his death, becoming a partner in a large farm near Muscatine, Iowa, when Elm Tree Farm was sold in 1962.

At that time Naurice and Thelma moved to Inverness where they lived until moving to Northfield, Minnesota in 1984.

The date of his death was Wednesday, May 2, 1990, at the Odd Fellows Nursing home in Northfield following a stroke six weeks before.

Naurice was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; three sons, Dr. Burton Nesset and wife Jean of Tacoma, Wash., Dr. David Nesset and wife Solveig of Rochester, Minnesota, and the Rev. Philip Nesset and wife Nancy of Fieldbrook, California; ten grandchildren, Linda Bahr and husband Ronald, Tacoma, Wash., Diane Tollefson and husband Jack, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Marlys Nesset and husband John McAuliffe, Tucson, AZ, Peter Nesset, Chicago, Joel and Matthew Nesset and Sara Dunnett and husband Mark, all of Rochester, Minnesota, Dana Hetzler and husband Steve, Evanston, Illinois, and Tara and Kaia Nesset, both of Fieldbrook, California; four great-grandchildren, Mark and Jolene Smith, Fieldbrook, California; one sister, Doris Waldeland and husband O.E., Bloomington, Minnesota; and 24 nieces and nephews.
