Howard Shipman, c1899-c1949
Howard Shipman, about 50, died at Dodge Center, Minnesota, Tuesday after an illness of only a month. Apparently in good health he was suddenly stricken. Doctors first diagnosed his illness as ulcer, but at the clinic at Rochester, Minnnesota, it was immediately determined that it was cancer. Although the new cancer serum was at once administered, the disease had progressed too far for the serum to be of any benefit.
Mr. Shipman spent the greater part of his life at McIntire and worked for the Chicago Great Western Railroad. His position at Dodge Center was maintainer of the signal department. Until going there he made his home with his mother, Mrs. Bertha Shipman, who is in critical condition. She is being cared for at the I.C. Wheeler home, north of Riceville. Her only other child, Mrs. Frank Kellogg (Ruby), died of the same disease as her brother, last summer. Her husband, Frank Kellogg, is at the Wheeler home, helping care for Mrs. Shipman.
Surviving Howard is his wife, the former Lois Wheeler, whom he married about seven years ago, and their children, a daughter, 4, and a son, 3.
Funeral service is being held today, Thursday, at the Mrs. Bertha Shipman home, at McIntire, at 1:30 p.m., and the Baptist church there at 2 p.m. The Rev. E. Bodenham will conduct the service assisted by the Rev. Thorlakson, pastor of the church. Burial will be made in the Wayne cemetery.
