Frank McKanna
Dead After Illness
of Several WeeksFrank McKanna passed away at his home on South Seventh street early Wednesday morning. He had been in failing health for a year but critically only the past several weeks.
He was born in Portage City, Wisconsin, June 18, 1856, the son of Frank and Catherine McKanna. He first came to Mitchell county in 1875, then returned to Wisconsin for a short time. When he returned a little later he made Osage his home for the rest of his life except for two years spent farming in South Dakota.
During the early part of his residence in Osage he worked as a mechanic in the Kelley-Morgan foundry, then he worked for a time with John Kathan's father (Sheriff Kathan's grandfather) in the manufacture of driving sulkies. Later he established a wagon shop, continuing it until machines took such work from the handcraftsmen. He then followed the carpenter's trade the rest of his entire life.
On June 26, 1886, he married Nettie Lower Carter. There were four children in the family; Emma McKanna, who passed away in 1902; Clarence, who died in 1929; Tillie (Mrs. Lloyd Coonradt) and Jessie (Mrs. Gus Swanson). The latter two survive. The wife and mother died in 1921.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Champion funeral home, the Rev. John D. Kern officiating.
