Mitchell County Press News
Dec. 24, 1937

Mrs. Sarah Newcombe passed away at her home Monday afternoon following a long illness and although she had not family closer than nieces, she leaves a large circle of friends who sincerely grieve her passing. In life she was of a quiet and retiring disposition, but of an understanding, sympathetic nature that won her friends everywhere.

Her unusual bravery and uncomplaining attitude through her long and painful illness has been the subject of much commendation.

Obituary

Sarah Boyer was born Jan. 9, 1863, at Baldwin, Iowa, the youngest child in the family. She died at Osage, Iowa, Dec. 27, 1937.

In 1863 she moved with her parents to Frankfort, Minn., where her mother died in December, 1864. Then with her father she moved to Forest City, where her father passed away in 1872. She came to Osage in April, 1873 and here she has lived most of the time since.

On Feb. 8, 1883, she was married to Charles Newcombe at Floyd. They established their home in Osage and occupied a house on the same ground, where in 1892 they built a new home, and where she has since lived. Mr. Newcombe passed away Dec. 12, 1929.

Mrs. Newcombe was a member of the Women's Relief Corps since January, 1914, and the Osage Naturalist club since February, 1931.

Until her last lillness she enjoyed good health and in spite of her failing condition managed to remain in her home and attend to its duties until recently.

She lived a simple life and found her greatest joy with her friends; she also loved to spend much time with her flowers and growing things.

She is survived by five nieces and one nephew, the children of her only sister.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Shelledy funeral home conducted by the Rev. Stiles Lessly, pastor of the Congregational church. Interment was in the Osage cemetery.
