Mrs. Herman Bortz, 76, died Tuesday, February 3rd, at the Nora Springs Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for several weeks, suffering with cancer.
Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, February 6th, at the Evangelical United Brethren church with the Rev. Vernon Overturf officiating. Mrs. James Petersen sang, “The Lord is My Shepherd” and “The Old Rugged Cross,” with Mrs. Floyd Yaggy as pianist.
The casket was borne by Paul Gildner, Arnold Volkman, Ed Schlosser, Thomas Burlingham, Chester Brandau and Donald Bortz.
Mrs. Bortz, nee Anna Matilda Vouquett, was born October 29, 1882 in Griefenberg, Germany. When she was nine years old she came to the United States with her parents and settled in Nora Springs. One brother died in early childhood. She attended the public schools and the Nora Springs Seminary.
She was married to Herman Bortz December 11, 1912, and they lived on a farm north of Rudd until his death in August 1942. She later moved back to Nora Springs, where she spent the balance of her life.
She was an active member of the Evangelical United Brethren church in Nora Springs and of its organizations during her entire life. She was also an active member of the Crescent club until this past year, when ill health compelled her to resign her membership.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Katherine) Braham of Cresco; and three granddaughters, Kristine, Ruth and Janice Braham.
