Funeral at Osage for G. H. Sawyer

OSAGE, IOWA — Funeral services for George H. Sawyer, 83, former longtime Osage superintendent of schools, who died Sunday at his home in Des Moines, were here Tuesday afternoon, with burial in the Osage cemetery.

Mr. Sawyer was born and reared on a farm near Osage. He received his education in the Osage schools, the former Cedar Valley Seminary and the University of Chicago. After being graduated from the University of Chicago, he returned to his home community and was elected as an instructor in the Cedar Valley Seminary, in mathematics. After two years he was named to the Osage school system as instructor, and in two years ascended to the superintendency, which position he held for nearly 50 years, and held the title of Dean of Iowa Educators.

His father, Edwin L. Sawyer, was a former Mitchell and St. Ansgar school superintendent. He
married Nora Vaughan of Hudson in 1901.

Mr. Sawyer was feted in May, 1948, upon his retirement in Osage. He moved with his wife to Bloomington, Indiana, to be with their only daughter, Mrs. Dan Martino, and her husband. Last September they moved to Des Moines with the Martino family when Mr. Martino became bandmaster at Drake University.

Mr. Sawyer was a member of First Baptist Church in Osage, longtime member of the Mitchell county board of education, member on boards of various philanthropic organizations, was a Knight Templar, 50 year Mason, member of Walt Whitman Club, Rotary and Lions clubs, Chamber of Commerce, member of the Iowa State Education Association and the National Education Association.

He was state chaplain at one time for the Masons, and was past president of the Northeast Iowa Teachers Association. He served on many department groups for the state association in various fields.

He was a star athlete under the famed Amos Alonzo Stagg at the University of Chicago, and never lost his keen interest in athletics.

Survivors include his wife and daughter, both of Des Moines.

George Hoyt Sawyer, 83, of 2203 1/2 Cottage Grove Ave., widely known Iowa educator, died early Sunday morning at his home here. he had been in failing health.

Mr. Sawyer was active for many years in Iowa education circles and was superintendent of schools at Osage for 50 years. . . .
