St. Ansgar Man dies in car upset

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Ed Gould, 72***, of St. Ansgar, was fatally injured about 4:30 p. m. Monday in an automobile upset at the north edge of town on highway 218.

Gould, alone, was returning home from a trip into the country. The highway was not slippery at the spot and Mitchell County Sheriff Lewis Haberkorn of Osage said Gould might have suffered a heart attack.

The car swerved off the road, overturned and Gould suffered a broken neck, dying within a few minutes.

Deceased had been a longtime resident of St. Ansgar and prior to that had lived at Otranto.
For many years he installed farm electric light plants and later was employed as an electrician with the Mitchell REA.

Surviving, besides his widow, is a son* living in California. Another son drowned at Mitchell
about 22** years ago.

Auto Upsets in Ditch;
St. Ansgar Man Dies

Edward Gould, 74, St. Ansgar, was killed at 5 p.m. Monday when his auto left highway 218 on the north edge of St. Ansgar and rolled over in the ditch.

Dr. C. S. Whitley, Mitchell county coroner, said Gould died from a broken neck. The coroner said Gould evidently suffered a heart attack or fainting spell.

The car was only going 20 miles an hour or so and no one was coming, Dr. Whitley said. There was only slight damage to the car.

Gould is survived by his wife and a son Kermit, in California. He was a life-long resident of the St. Ansgar area, being born at Otranto. Funeral arrangements will be made today.

NOTES:
* That son would be Kermit Gould.

**The other son, Cromwell, died in 1924 or 28 years before, not 22. Kermit and Cromwell were twins.

*** Other sources indicate his age at death was 74, not 72.

Ed married Ida Williams in 1903.
