GOLBERG, Peter A. 1824-1905

GOLBERG, ECHBURG, DALAGER, BENTERUD

Peter Amundson Golberg was born at Gol, Praestegjeld, Hallingdal, Norway, June 10, 1824 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.N. Echburg, in St. Ansgar, Iowa, at four o'clock in the afternoon of April 12, 1905.

Mr. Golberg had been in failing health for about three years but it was only during the last three months of his life that he was confined to his bed and during that time he escaped much suffering, but was simply stricken down by the weight of more than eighty years; and he was ready to go, as often during the last weeks of sickness he said that he was at peace with God and was tired of this world, wishing to depart for that goodly land which lies beyond the grave where there is no more sorrow nor trouble.

In the year 1851, Mr. Golberg said farewell to his native land and sailed for America.

He settled at Rock Prairie, Wisconsin where he made his home until 1853 when he came to St. Ansgar, Iowa with Rev. Clausen, which was his home till death.

In 1854 he married Begit A. Benterud with whom he happily lived for 45 years. She died July 26, 1899. Seven children were born to them. Two died in infancy and three- Amos, Andrew and Rosy- after reaching maturity. Two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Dalager of Austin, Minn., and Mrs. A.N. Echburg of St. Ansgar survive, together with seven grandchildren.

Mr. Golberg was one of the sturdy pioneers of Iowa, and he had the true hospitality of the pioneer. His home was the shelter and the home for many a weary traveler in an early day. And many who had just arrived from far off Norway or from other countries or other states remain to bear witness to his hospitality.

He was also a very religious man and his purse was always open to promote the welfare of the church and religion. He was one of the organizers of the St. Ansgar Norwegian Lutheran congregation more than 51 years ago and he also by his own labor helped to lay the corner stone and build the church here at St. Ansgar.

The funeral was held in the church he helped to build so many years before, on the afternoon of April 15, 1905, Rev. J. Olsen and Rev. Waldeland officiating, and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery north of town.
