Lewis Charlton Golberg was born May 12, 1886 four miles southwest of Carpenter, and died at the same place September 16th, 1908, being therefore 22 years, 4 months and four days of age. The place of his birth was the home where he spent the most of the 22 years of his life. Here he grew to manhood, receiving the education of the country school and remaining at home nearly all the time assisting his father with the duties of the farm, with the exception of four months spent with his brother, Alfred, at Lake Park, Minn. and other brief periods when he worked for neighbors near home. The Friday before his death he was working south of Carpenter threshing when he was stricken down apparantly with the heat but what later developed into meningitis and in spite of the best efforts of physicians from St. Ansgar and Northwood his life went out Wednesday, September 16th. The funeral was held at the Deer Creek Norwegian Lutheran church of which he was a member, Friday September 18th, the funeral being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Waldeland, and his remains were laid to rest in the St. Ansgar U.N. L. cemetery beside those of a brother. His father, mother and three brothers are left to mourn his early death. Lewis was a young man of exemplary character and a general favorite with all who knew him and his death caused unusal regret in the entire community.
