OBITUARY: Harald F. "Bud" Goplerud, 1920-2003

A funeral mass for Harald F. "Bud" Goplerud, 83, of 904 6th St. SE, Mason City, was held Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery. He died Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the IOOF Home.

Bud was born in Osage, Iowa on October 2, 1920 and died on his 83rd birthday of complications from Parkinson's. He was the son of Clifford and Ethel Goplerud and brother to Ann Goplerud Kennedy, Dr. Jane Goplerud and Dr. C.P. Goplerud.

In 1947, he married June Adel Kunz from Wesley, Iowa. Together they have four children; Dena of Des Moines, Nann of Dallas, Texas, H.F. Jr. of Los Angeles, California and Julia of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by sons-in-law; Dr. Thomas Zisko, Ben Weaver and Dr. Arland Hotchkiss, six grandchildren; Elizabeth, Leigh, Patrick, Benjamin, Brett and Samuel.

Bud graduated from Osage High School in 1938 and from Grinnell College in 1942 with degrees in chemistry and economics. During the war years, he worked at Eastman Company in Oakridge, Tennessee, supervising the separation of uranium isotopes U-238 from U-235 through an electro-magnetic process.

In 1947, Bud established Goplerud Lubricants, Inc. in Mason City. He was owner and president for 37 years until his retirement at age 64.

He was enthusiastically involved in many organizations such as the Boy Scout Eagle Board, Jefferson Boy Scout Troop #2, Director of the First National Bank for 27 years, President of the Mason City Country Club and the Euchre & Cycle Club, and a member of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and Elks Lodge.

Bud will be remembered for his sincere interest in people of all ages and backgrounds. He had many devoted friends and often entertained them with his humor and wit.

Bud had an avid interest in music, grammar, agriculture and learning about diverse subjects.
