Osage Man Strangled in Corn Picker

OSAGE, IOWA — A 71-year-old retired farmer died of strangulation near here Saturday when his clothing became tangled in a corn picker.

Dead was Alton Markham, a lifelong resident of Mitchell county. The accident occurred about 10:15 a.m. as Markham was helping with the corn harvest on the Galen Jacobs farm, eight miles southeast of Osage.

Jacobs said he left Markham in the field as he drove a load of corn to the farm yard and when he returned, found Markham's body upright against the picker elevator. Markham's coveralls had caught in the picker machinery and wound around his neck. Mitchell County Coroner Dr. R. L. Whitley ruled that death was due to strangulation. He said Markham's neck had been broken.

Markham was born in 1884 near Osage, the son of William and Jennie Markham.

He is survived by his wife, three brothers, Ray and William, of Osage and John, of Lyle, Minn., and a sister, Mrs. George Bush, of Anthony, Minn.

A sister Mrs. Pearl Hobkirk preceded him in death.

The body is at the Champion funeral home where services are pending.

Worker Strangled in Corn Picker

RICEVILLE, IOWA - An elderly farm worker was strangled when his coveralls' collar was caught in chain on a corn picker, Saturday morning.

Alvin [or Alton] Markham, 71, Osage, Iowa, was working on a farm southwest of Riceville when the accident occurred. His collar became entwined in the elevator chain on the picker.

Funeral services were held at Osage, Monday.
